Headaches

Headaches can ruin anyone's day.  I am blown away by the number of people I talk to that deal with headaches on a regular basis. If you are having headaches more than a couple of times each month, something is wrong.

The question is obviously, "what is causing your headaches?"  I guarantee you that it is not an Advil deficiency!  You should expect nothing less from your healthcare practitioner than a careful evaluation into the root cause of your problem.  Whether you're experiencing migraines, tension headaches, or cluster headaches, there are things you can do to decrease their frequency and intensity.

The first step is probably to start a diet and/or activity diary.  This will help us narrow down the cause.  Once we identify triggers, we can work to eliminate them. We can also utilize herbs and supplements that have proven to be effective.   Many headaches are caused by tension in the muscles of the neck and dysfunction of the joints in that area.  Headaches can also be caused by dehydration, TMJ dysfunction, or various other kinds of issues. Chiropractic care has been clinically proven to decrease the frequency, duration, and intensity of headaches. Dr. Noah  at the Boise Spine Center will do a thorough physical exam to determine if your headaches are the result of any of these issues and then well render the appropriate care to help you feel better fast.

Migraines

I am sorry if you've had to live with these.  They can be horrible events.  The key to managing migraine headaches is to identify the trigger causing the events.  Food, sounds, stress, bright blinking lights, and sleep deprivation are some common triggers.  I recommend you start a diary to track the events just prior to your migraine. Next time you experience a migraine write down all of the food and activities you are involved in leading up to the migraine.  This is a key step in decreasing the frequency of your headaches.  Chiropractic adjustments, combined with muscle work and specific herbs and adaptogens can significantly decrease your migraine episodes.  To find out what we can do for you, please call our office to set up a consultation.

Low Back Pain - Chiropractic treatment in Boise, ID 83709

Some surveys have shown that up to 90% of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain is also one of the biggest reasons employees miss work - this means higher insurance premiums for everyone.

So, why is low back pain such a common problem? There are several answers to this perplexing problem.

1)  The anatomy of the back is extremely complex. Each vertebral segment has several joints that it meets with.  You have the costo-vertebral joints in the thorax, the intervertebral disc, and the facet joints.  All of these joints are surrounded by ligaments and muscles, some of which are thinner than a pencil.  Of particular importance, is the close proximity with the nervous system.  Your spinal cord is located inside the spinal canal of the vertebrae, and each spinal segment has a set of nerve roots that come out near the facet joints.  If these nerves are affected by inflammation or structural changes in the spine, you may have more severe symptoms.

2)  Most of our waking hours are spent in a position that puts stress on our discs. These discs are designed to be the shock absorption for our spine, so the outer part is made of alternating layers of fibrous tissue while the inner portion of the disc is a soft gelatinous material.  A disc herniation occurs when a portion of the inner gel escapes out past the fibrous layers.  When there is a constant load on these discs, they tend to dry up and get squished.  If you add vibration to that (like riding in a car for several hours), you will get even more of a drying and squishing effect.  Please see the chart to the right for references on the amount of load on your discs in various positions. load on low back discs

3) Deconditioned (weak or inhibited) core stabilizing muscles like your spinal, abdominal, and gluteal muscles, make your low back more susceptible to injury.  If you are one of those people who says, "my back goes out once or twice every year," then it is likely you have a deconditioned core.  We can help get you out of the acute pain stage with chiropractic and physiotherapy modalities, but more important to your long-term health will be a targeted core stabilization program.
