Chiropractic Adjustments

chiropractor-adjustment-boiseChiropractic is a healing art that has been around for well over a hundred years. Millions of people have benefited from this form of conservative health care. Here are just a few things chiropractic has been proven to help: low back pain, headaches, colic, neck pain, migraines, tension headaches, scoliosis, and much more.

Please keep in mind that a ChiropracTOR can practice in many different ways and utilize many different adjunct therapies, but in this article we are discussing the chiropractic adjustment.

The actual adjustment itself can be performed to almost any joint in the body (we are not just back doctors). The concept is the same - you are helping restore function to that area of the body, and sometimes to areas further down the nerve or the kinetic chain.

The adjustment restores this function in several ways:

-it stimulates small nerve fibers in and around the joint, thus blocking pain and reminding your brain that this joint exists and needs to move. If you've ever worn a brace or cast for more than a week, you know exactly what I mean.

-it can help free up adhesions and scar tissue that have built up due to unwanted stress on that joint.

-it can increase blood flow and therefore nutrients that help repair surrounding tissues.

-it can help pump stagnant fluid that may be causing chemical irritation to a nerve or blood vessel, which can have a profound effect as your nerves control most all functions of your body.

-in some cases, an adjustment may even return a bone to its correct position. Bones don't have to be completely dislocated to cause symptoms, and a chiropractic adjustment can help .

-when delivered with the correct speed and force, an adjustment can affect small nerve fibers in your joint capsule, tendons, and muscles to get those structures to relax. This is essential for anyone in chronic pain due to tight muscles. The main job of a muscle is to move a joint, so if your muscle becomes tight and tender, the associated joints will be affected. That is I always address muscle issues when treating a patient's joint.
